FedEx union to seek strike authorization

NEW YORK, Oct 18 (Reuters) - The pilots' union at FDX Corp.'s Federal Express
voted on Sunday to seek permission from its members to call a strike if their stalled
labor contract talks with the courier do not improve.

The Fedex Pilot Association (FPA) said in a statement its board of directors had voted unanimously to send a strike
authorization vote out to its 3,200 members this week.

''If approved by two-thirds of our membership, this vote will give the FPA the authorization to take strike action against
the Federal Express Corporation during its peak shipping season,'' it said.

The FPA, which represents more than 94 percent of FedEx pilots, said it expected to count the votes by November 20.

It said its board took the vote following a request made by its negotiating team, which has seen their talks with the courier
stall since September.

The FPA is seeking higher salaries and better retirement benefits for its pilots, among other items.

FedEx spokesman Greg Rossiter told Reuters the courier had sent its latest proposed contract to the pilots this weekend
after running into a deadlock with the FPA team.

The pilots have twice rejected tentative agreements reached between the FPA and the FedEx, which have been holding
talks since 1993.
