JLA, I am a big supporter of public TV in my area. I also read a lot of books on history and try to watch all the 20th century historical documentaries I can, as I hope to work in that field once I retire from software (which could be very soon the way things are going in enterprise software). The historical documentary filmakers I know of do extensive research work, and try to present all sides to the story. For example take the recent "Irish in America" piece (from wtbs Boston, I think) - in order to create that footage, the filmakers had to go through literally hundreds of pictures and books, interviews with scholars at various universities etc. Try to acquire that same information on your own - forget it! There was an entire staff working on the Irish in America. Same with all the others, the west, etc.

PS Just because the "History Channel" says its so, would you believe it?

Nope. But by watching the History channel and supporting the work they do, you can be more informed in general. I know I am, as a result of the work of the History Channel and the PBS affiliates.
