Just because they split hypothetically into three companies does not ensure competition in and of itself.

Of course, it does. Because after you buy the OS, you can independently exercise your choice about which company's application software to buy. And you will then go for the best (which would not necessarily be Microsoft). The OS company can no longer influence your decision about whom you buy your application software or your internet software from.

A split along these lines will break the Microsoft hegemony and has a very high likelihood of reviving the competition, if not in the OS field, at least in the applications and internet areas. Why else do you think Microsoft would be opposing it?
