I think you are absolutely right abut that Patricia. These statements like the "third biggest" such and such, or "has a deal" with so and so, or "owns land" somewhere or other has become much, much easier to verify. It really helps that the corporate records for companies are on-line with Edgar and the press releases are part of the permanent record. When more states like Delaware, California and New York have their records on line and all of the local property tax records are available for all of the counties all over the US, it will be even tougher. Cross referencing Edgar officer and ownership data with corporate records and Press Releases creates really valuable connections in unraveling the truth.

Not to mention that when a group of investors have been mugged they can cumulatively join together and become a formidable force in demanding recourse from the SEC and even possibly meeting a critical enough threshold to make legal action for recovery from the principals of the companies possible.

Indeed this is the other cutting edge of the sword.

Unfortunately, I think the scams themselves will evolve along with the technology to be ever more subtle to uncover as the "Cons" take these factors into account. As always exercising common sense and digging another level deeper and not relying solely on those that stand to gain by misrepresentation will continue to be the last line of defense.
