Bill, tons of now famous artists have embraced themes just like Mapplethorpes "piss christ". It is simply a shocking stab at established morals, thats all it is. I think the most famous piece with this theme is Manets dejuener sur l'herbe - this is where a bunch of artists are eating lunch in the park with a nude woman. At the time, this was shocking to the Parisian establishment because all the nudes in art were previously religious symbolism. Look at this now, what do you think of it?
