It's not clear to me that MS expects to make anything back from Encarta, as you say. MS has done quite a bit of (unprofitable) multimedia seed investing, and I believe only a few titles from their efforts proved at all popular. On the subject of technology dividends for education--I believe the majority of people in POSITIONS to leverage technology will NOT do so because, in this country, we do not have visionaries and technology enthusiasts heading educational administrations. So we continue to limp along with 19th-century style classrooms. As for notebook games, it depends on your preferences. Portable rigs excel as "puzzle/adventure" game platforms e.g. Myst/Riven/Monkey Island type games. Portables tend to be lousy for action/twitch/3D games such as Quake or Unreal due to specialization of video hardware and absence of adequate 3D acceleration.
