I think that Cadence and Synopsys are working to provide a more
complete design environment, from high-level design entry through
physical implementation.

Mentor has tools in these areas, too, but they don't dominate
a market like Synopsys in synthesis or Cadence in place and route.
Mentor does have good "point tools", for HDL simulation or
Design For Testability.

Right now, it looks like the stock is valued more like Viewlogic
(~ 20 P/E) than Cadence or Synopsys. Viewlogic is also strong in
point tools.
