01/02 13:09-DJ: U.S. Robotics To Ship Higher-Speed Modem Technology This Month

SKOKIE, Ill. -(Dow Jones)- U.S. Robotics Corp. said Thursday that it expects
to begin shipping its new generation, higher-speed x2 Internet-access modem
technology later this month. Its x2 Hub system is expected to be shipped to
Internet service providers in February.
The company said tests in seven Bell operating company regions showed the new
technology will allow users to download Internet text and graphics at almost
twice the speed of current standard modem connections.
A high percentage of test calls had only one analog-to-digital conversion in
the path of the call, a condition necessary to connect at the higher speeds
supported by x2. The remaining calls fall back to a V.34 operation, which is
the modem standard most widely used today.
U.S. Robotics is seeking Federal Communications Commission certification of
its x2 products, which is required before x2 hubs can be shipped.
U.S. Robotics designs, manufactures, markets and supports remote access
servers, enterprise communications systems, desktop/mobile client products and
modems, along with telephone-transmission products.
