We met a caretaker at the bayside botanic garden of this side of the Big Island, who liked us and gave us the run-down on "commercial" ginger-farming. Apparently, grown in anything approaching .25 to 3 acres, it is harder to bring to fruition than dope. Bugs, germs, dogs, all manner of facial-expression calamities effecting a "crop" of marketable size. Rigorous fencing and guarding. "Easier to work for the garden." As I said, prices have fallen, reflecting something, and I bet you have a darn nice garden. I'm jealous, if that's OK. Fungicides, fumicides, thievery, contaminants, rotting, a host of.....hosts. |
