You should check out the PQ products. They are amongst those "how did I live life before I had this??" type products.

DriveImage handles all the configuration from the software side. It's not a tool for layfolks though, you're right on that score.

The physical drive caddies are also not really designed for laypeople either. If you want to see a complete description of the type that I use (RH-17) check out:

(Don't believe their hype about heat control. The downside of using a caddy like this is essentially the creation of a plastic insulation layer that prevents heat from dissipating from the drive. This was particularly bad with that IBM 7200 RPM I just bought--after an hour, it was too hot to touch barehanded! I usually resolve heat issues by leaving a drive bay open above each drive rack in the case.)

This is where I was really hoping to see a big push for Device Bay, it would have set the stage for simple HDD swapping for Everyman ... but Device Bay seems to have gone the way of dodo ... too bad!
