Inprise and Hitachi Strengthen Co-Development Relationship with Ten-Year Licensing Agreement

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--October 20, 1998--

Inprise's VisiBroker and Java Development Technologies Key to Hitachi's CORBA Products Strategy

Inprise Corporation (Nasdaq:INPR), a premier provider of integration software and services to leading OEMs and ISVs, today announced that it has signed a worldwide, multimillion-dollar licensing agreement with Hitachi, Ltd., one of the world's leading vendors of reliable enterprise software systems. The ten-year deal extends a relationship that the two companies have had since 1995 for co-developing CORBA-based products -- such as TPBroker, Hitachi's production-proven CORBA object transaction service product.

Under terms of the new agreement, Hitachi will continue to license Inprise's VisiBroker CORBA object request broker (ORB) and will begin to license Inprise's Java development technology for inclusion in Hitachi's CORBA technology products, such as TPBroker and the Network Objectplaza(a) product suite. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. ((a)Network Objectplaza is currently marketed only in Japan.) Inprise and Hitachi also continue to discuss further co-development activities.

Mitsuhiko Kodaira, general manager of Hitachi's Software Division said, "Hitachi is pleased to be licensing Inprise's CORBA and Java technology. As the industry's de facto standard ORB, VisiBroker has been -- and will continue to be -- the strong foundation for Hitachi's production-proven, enterprise-ready, leading middleware products, TPBroker and Hitachi's System Concept Network Objectplaza. This agreement expands the business relations between Inprise and Hitachi and strengthens the enterprise solutions provided by Hitachi. We are confident that the combination of Inprise's products, co-developed products such as TPBroker, and Hitachi's reliable software products will continue to excite Hitachi's enterprise customers."

Delbert W. Yocam, Inprise chairman and CEO said, "Inprise is proud to announce the strengthening of our relationship with Hitachi. It is especially gratifying to have our technology endorsed by one of the recognized leaders in robust and reliable enterprise software systems. This agreement represents one of the largest deals in our company's history -- confirming that we are succeeding in our strategy to become a major enterprise IT vendor."
