CNET Rolls Out Merchant Program on Shopper.com
PR Newswire - October 19, 1998 12:10
More Than 50 Merchants Sign Up to Greet Buyers at the Internet's Largest Directory of Computer Products and Prices
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- CNET, Inc. (Nasdaq: CNWK) today announced that it has signed more than 50 top merchants of computer products, including Egghead.com, Hardware Street and NECX, to take part in a new merchant marketing program on CNET Shopper.com ( shopper.com ). The new program creates opportunities for merchants to purchase preferred placements in Shopper.com's price listings and make their brands top of mind for users at the point of purchase. Under the terms of the new program, merchants will pay CNET for each lead generated to their online stores. At the end of the second quarter, CNET reported that it generated more than 40,000 leads per day at its Shopper.com service. Shopper.com (formerly ComputerESP), which launched in June, 1998, is the Internet's largest comparison shopping resource for computer-related products with a directory of 100,000 products and one million prices.
"When users come to Shopper.com they are poised to purchase, which makes it an extremely effective marketing vehicle for merchants," stated Halsey Minor, Chairman and CEO of CNET. "In a very short period of time, we have aggregated a large audience of buyers at Shopper.com, creating significant demand for this valuable shelf space. The merchant program represents an important new revenue stream for CNET, and we believe it will contribute substantially to CNET's results beginning in the fourth quarter of 1998."
The marketing program offers three tiers of visibility for online merchants: Premier, Preferred and General. The premier partners are Egghead.com (Nasdaq: EGGS), Hardware Street and NECX; preferred partners are CDW (Nasdaq: CDWC) and Virtual-World (OTC Bulletin Board: VTCO). General listings partners include: Cyberian Outpost and McGlen Micro, Inc., among more than 45 others. When a user searches for or clicks on a particular product, he receives a page that lists all the participating merchants selling that product, with real-time prices and information on availability, taxes and other surcharges and international sales. Premier partners will appear first in the listings, followed by Preferred and General partners. Users may also sort the listings by price at the click of a button.
Keith Halloran, Director of Marketing for NECX, stated, "As the leading online resource for users looking for information on computing products, CNET is a very pure play for us. Consequently, we have found Shopper.com to be extremely productive in introducing real buyers to the superior product information, prices and service offered by NECX. The premier merchant program allows us to build our brand in a very credible and reliable buying environment, and we expect to see significant benefits as we continue to collaborate with CNET in the future."
"This program ensures that we are providing our users information from the most well-known and reliable merchants online," said Kevin McKenzie, site manager for Shopper.com. "Users have many different reasons for choosing a particular merchant, and we have made it very convenient for them to find the best one for them, whether they shop by brand, or prefer to sort by some other criteria." |
