Seriously, now. Of course, you are right about Arendt. And her basic distinction is of course legitimate. (The problem is, of course, that any given dictatorship can shift from one category to another, at one time or another. In the post-Brezhnev period, for example,I would argue that the Soviet dictatorship was becoming more authoritarian than totalitarian. Otherwise, a Gorbachev could probably never have emerged.)

I was (as you no doubt know) referring to the long Jeanne Kirkpatrick article, elaborating on Arendt's basic distinction, the article that so impressed Ronald Reagan and that catapulted Kirkpatrick from relative obscurity into fame and glory...The Rest is History...
