I don't think you're a mustang in the mud. Being quiet and listening to ourselves is something we aren't taught or encouraged to do. We are asked to "be quiet", but not, "be quiet and listen to yourself".

Meditation is a structured method which allows one to quiet the mind in order to effectively hear it. Many people report an inability to turn down the volume on the chatter (jingles, arguments, "to do" lists, . . .) when they first begin meditating, but with perseverance and practice one can begin to eliminate chatter at will, and at this point, begin serious exploration of the mindstream.

Meditation is like tuning in a radio station in the dark. At first you may have to search through static, but once you near the desired signal, it draws you closer until the desired signal is all you can hear. Meditation is our hand on the mind's tuning knob.
