John you questioned possible motives, and I will respond with a possibility -- I have no evidence for this supposition -- it is just a possibility: If bonuses and stock options are awarded to top management on the basis of total profits rather than per share performance, then there is a tremendous incentive to grow, in spite of the fact that it is not within the best interests of the shareholders.
