>As far as I know, Mapplethorpe did not receive public money to produce "piss christ" either….<
Perhaps Mapplethorpe did not receive the money, but had the Philadelphia's Institute of Contemporary Art (the NEA supported organization that sponsored Mapplethorpe's homo-erotic "art") sponsored works that denied the fact of the Holocaust, many people would ask that they not be forced via taxes to pay for the insult.
Andres Serrano did in fact receive an NEA grant for an exhibit that included his "Piss Christ" image. Mr. Serrano has every right under the Constitution to develop his "art", but I do not think it very American to force anyone to pay to have their very identity insulted. If his work is so excellent, then it should survive the open market. It is simply un-American to force liberal and blasphemous notions of taste upon the public through taxes. Again, anyone has the right to put a crucifix in urine, but I think it a supreme insult to the identities of Christians who revere Christ and who think His image should not be treated so blasphemously. It is unspeakable to force these same Christians to pay for the insult. Lastly, when the country rises up to support this sort of insult, it appears to claim it well and good to marginalize and reject a segment of its own population.
The NEA through the New York State Council on the Arts also sponsored "Post Porn Modernist," a performance by Annie Sprinkler, star of blue movies. The nature of the performance? Ms. Sprinkle masturbated on stage, saying "Usually I get paid a lot of money for this, but tonight it's government funded."
This is utter filth masquerading as "art", and I do not want to have anything to do with it. How anyone can defend public support of this garbage is beyond reason, but as large numbers of Americans support a lying sexual predator for President, it, on second thought, is understandable. |
