I don't know if you ever got answers to your questions, so here goes:

I doubt that the difference in price between an 8-port switch with 8 GBICs or an 8-port switch with 6 GBICs would be significant enough to warrant Ancor trying to offer it.

I confirmed today that the MKII-8 has a new ASIC, but it is still a 4-port design.

The last I heard, it was LSI Logic.
