Burney, Corel's senior vice-president of engineering, says it was a productive
project because it gave Corel some valuable insight into Java's strengths and
weaknesses.

"We learned that at the time, Java wasn't necessarily ready for full-scale application development," he says. "It's the kind of thing that unless you try it, you won't know if something is doable. It paid off handsomely in that we learned quite a bit from that experience."
