Fred,

>> In addition to competing with various RISC based CPU's,<<

Which 3 RISC based companies and products are the ones to watch?

>>Well....AMD is definitely competition on the low end (how competent is debatable <ggg>).<<

Debatable indeed! AMD has more market share than Intel in the sub 1,000$ PC market.
If AMD were COMPETENT how much would they have?
Can we forget about Cyrix/NSM for awhile?
I haven't seen IDT in the retail stores have you?

>> I think the ultimate goal is to become as dominant at the high end as they have been on the desktop for so many years while at the same time continuing to get more than their fair share of profits at the lower segments.<<

Yeah , hi end is the only place left to run now. Big bucks too!
The lo end is a lost cause and not worth chasing with x86 products going past the year 2000 and beyond. StrongARM is a different story though.

There's also many other competitors to Intel that are not so obvious. Take DVD for instance, DVD competes for people's disposable income. Decisions will be made: Do I want to spend my savings on a PC that I don't use much or a DVD that I might use more since I watch a lot of TV?

HDTV: At the high end , will people wait and then spend their money on a super HDTV experience instead of a 3,000$ PC that frustrates the hell out of them. My guess is that a lot of 50 and over folks who have farsightedness and arthritic hands may opt for the DTV side of things.

There's a must read in Business Week Oct 26/1998 Digital D-DAY.
HDTV will play a very large part in convergence, no one knows exactly how it will play out , but this article gives a good basic
explanation of what's happening in this area.
