I think Phillip is providing some valuable input here as to APPLE'S strenghts from his viewpoint. He certainly I am sure is not expecting Apple to ever displace Wintel as the dominate player or that business standardize on Apple. Anyone looking for that type of performance should not waste a second here .
Now from my viewpoint Apple doesn't have to even approach accomplishing what it appears you are looking for to prove to be a very good investment here..
Apple has been very successful "in niche applications" and I think the moves Apple has been making are to preserve that success. The "niche" markets that they do best in , education ( which is hardly a "niche") and graphics applications are going to continue to experience significant growth.
There are several very significant marketing factors that will contibute to Apples comeback. 1) a relatively large extremely LOYAL users base( yes, their are some deflectors) . 2) a developer base that stands to loose a hell of a lot more if they adandon Apple than if they stand by them. The developers I know may be diversiflying but they aren't jumping ship. The NEXT move IMO certainly gives them one significant reason to hang tight. 3)Apple has a lot of allies in NSCP, SGI,SUNW, , MOT, IBM, etc and 4) No one out there wants WINTEL to be the only choice.
Apple does not have to even come close to penetrating MSFT's present market share to be a big success. They just have to hold on to what they have and grow with it to make us all very happy investors.
I think we will all get a big confidence boost on Jan 7. :-}
