Look like HLIT lost this one to Hybrid. By the way, the customer, PCTV, is trading up near 150% today. They have 2 way MMDS in Phoenix now. A positive development. Are we going to see more 2 way permissions coming from the FCC soon?

Hybrid Networks to Support SpeedChoice Launch of High-Speed Wireless Data Services

PR Newswire, Tuesday, September 29, 1998 at 09:12

PCTV Subsidiary Purchases Hybrid's Series 2000 Wireless Modems and Headend
Equipment; Will Be One of the First Companies In The U.S. to Offer Two-Way
MMDS Wireless Services

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Hybrid Networks, Inc.
(NASDAQ:HYBRE), a leading broadband access equipment company, today announced
it signed a three year contract with a potential value of $4 million with
SpeedChoice, a subsidiary of People's Choice TV Corp,
(BB: PCTV).
Under the terms of the agreement, SpeedChoice will purchase up to
10,000 Hybrid Series 2000 wireless modems to become one of the first Internet
service providers in the U.S. to launch two-way high-speed wireless data
services to residential customers.
"Hybrid Networks was chosen as our partner because the product is very
robust and flexible in the wireless digital environment," said
Matthew Oristano, Chairman and CEO of SpeedChoice and People's Choice TV.
"SpeedChoice can deliver one-way and two-way services using the same
transmitter with Hybrid's equipment. Hybrid's three downstream subchannels
minimize multipath interference better than other products and the multiple
narrow return channels give us better signal to noise ratio and range."
Oristano also said, "Our Value Added Resellers (VARs) endorsed our choice
of Hybrid because Hybrid reliably supports 20 PCs off one wireless modem with
a built-in router and can even operate more workstations when integrated into
a LAN by means of an external router and proxy server."
"Hybrid Networks is pleased that SpeedChoice chose Hybrid Network's
products for use in its markets," said Jane Zeletes, Executive Vice President
of Sales and Marketing for Hybrid Networks. "We believe SpeedChoice's
deployment of Hybrid's Series 2000 products which support one-way and two-way
wireless services today allows SpeedChoice to competitively offer its business
and residential customers high-speed Internet access and other communication
services in the future."
Through its parent company, SpeedChoice has exclusive control of wireless
frequencies in nine major U.S. cities including Chicago, Detroit, Houston,
Indianapolis, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Tucson.
Earlier this year, SpeedChoice launched high-speed Internet access services in
Detroit and in Phoenix using MMDS (Multichannel Multipoint Distribution
Service). SpeedChoice has also received permanent two-way authority for its
Phoenix market from the Federal Communications Commission.
Hybrid Network's Series 2000 wireless or cable modem/routers allow
operators to provide each individual or business subscriber with Internet
connectivity, supporting up to 20 PC's per modem/router. Hybrid Networks
products offer aggregated downstream bandwidth of 30Mbps per 6 MHz video
channel and upstream bit rates from 256Kb to 5Mbps, telephone return up to
33.6Kbps, or router return via ISDN, Frame Relay or T1.
Hybrid Networks splits the 6Mhz downstream channel into three 2MHz
subchannels each operating at 10 Mbps speed. Each subchannel has a 64 QAM
modulator. The three QAM modulators triples the ability of the adaptive
equalizer in the modem to fight the multipath reception caused by reflection
from water or buildings in a wireless environment and makes transmission more
robust.
Hybrid Networks, Inc., based in San Jose, CA, is a broadband access
equipment company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets cable and
wireless systems that provide high speed access to the Internet and corporate
intranets for both businesses and consumers. Hybrid's customers include cable
system operators, wireless system operators, Internet service providers,
resellers and other businesses.
