I know you cannot drive the monitor past its horizontal sync range. Overdriving the refresh could cause that to happen or just using too high a dot clock if X did not refuse to use it once you have maxed the hsync. I fried a Nec msync II that way. You need a new monitor with hsync going past 60 khz for half decent vga in X. The cards way outperform the tubes.
