Covered calls can be a useful ploy to suck in excess premiums due to high volatality days such as earnings. I sold ASND Dec 50 calls the day of the earnings for 5 1/4 (it was trading @6 that day) and bought them back next morning for 2 5/8. I did similar stuff with LU,AOL & DELL last qrt but LU has been beaten back so i was nervous about doing it today.
