Why would it have to be something that would lock users into a specific brand of disk? The drive vendors get together on other standard features, they should get together on this as well. Could be a demand driver that soaks up drives when they get too cheap? Or perhaps I don't understand the problems of swapping drives, since I don't do it very often.
