Toy, What's this? biz.yahoo.com Dell swaps Novell software for Microsoft's ATLANTA, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) on Wednesday said Dell Computer Corp., in a move to resolve its Year 2000 issues and consolidate its in-house computer systems, has replaced Novell Inc. (Nasdaq:NOVL - news) server software with Microsoft Corp.(Nasdaq:MSFT - news) software. In a statement, Microsoft said Dell has consolidated its servers from 225 to 25 by changing from Novell NetWare software to Microsoft Windows NT operating system software. Servers are high-speed computers that hold programs and data shared by all users connected to computer networks. Operating systems are the control systems that run computers and set the standards for all programs that function on them. Dell said in the release that it is now using the Windows NT Server system for file and print, messaging, Web and other services. The company said it chose the Windows operating system for its ability to consolidate applications and infrastructure onto a single system in order to drive down management costs.
