Ampex is looking for the best deal for them, which would be signing up as many HD makers as possible to the new technology while still holding the patent. Since maxtor is the only one right that has signed up, I would think that maxtor would have a short lived edge. On the downside, there's talk of IBM developing a like-product to that of ampexs' KP. It's hard to follow, but I'd suggest looking at the ampex thread to get a better understanding of how it might effect maxtor.
