--> Are they ctually losing $$$ from it?
Did they end up with the debt TI owed the It. Government? They also had a door of sorts in Europe with facility in Scotland. They will lose a lot of technical property by sending key engineers to Italy when they are needed to get the .21um going. That will lose them dollars and a possible edge too.
There are to many "new" projects going on at MU right now: Rendition, .21um, EDRAM, TI-Italy, TI-Singapore, Intel, Lehi(?), testing of all new products, trying to get and keep yields where they need to be, etc. All these take engineers with experience. The personnel there is maybe the best in the world but it is finite.
All this is money. Plus the actual dollars they put into the facility. Remember how much each new AMS stepper cost, how much each new furnace cost, etc. That is paid for with cash, not stock. And to get the suitcasefull of chips you need those items first. |
