I would bet Barrett's options were non-qualified because the options probably had a greater than $100K value on the grant date. Yes, I've read the tax code on this, but no I've never hit that level myself. Even if they are qualified, the AMT tax rate is no better than regular income tax. It's real hard to go long on employee options that are in the money big... it's a nice problem to have (not a problem for AMD employees).
