It is true that MSFT/gates has invented little of anything but he has always been humble enough and alert enough to know where to find what the market wanted. He is a master of software business. He went to Mosaic for the browser. Excel is not his. Word is someone elses. But he has always been able to package and sell to the public what they want even when it was not invented here. More scientific companies can take a lesson from this. PFE is a prime example. Notwithsatnding their excellent R&D they go out and assist others ie MST with their R&D for the right to market the fruit of the R&D. Great businesses are seldom built by great engineers. Land and Edison are the one's that quickly come to mind but they are the exceptions. TI and ATT were the leaders of IC tech. but look who the ultimate winner is INTC. One must never let emotion cloud the issue. Too much $$ gets lost that way.
