John,

You have little argument from me on what you said there. He is far from perfect on predicting future trends, but in his early days he seemed to be better at predicting what would be a popular idea. And his business skills and tenacity is very powerful (if not at many times steps over the line to unethical or illegal - i.e. anti-trust violations).

Remember though that Mr. Gates did not invent DOS, nor did Gates go with a good OS idea to IBM, the opportunity fell in his lap and he was smart enough to realize the potential it had. After he secured an ironclad PC desktop OS monopoly marketshare, then all his other "so called" innovative consumer software outputs were just gimmies.

If fact, Gates totally missed the power, popularity, and capabilities of the Internet. But once he realized that he had to get in, he simply had to take it, because the way his used his monopoly let him take it.
