Why would you assume Nortel is "intimately knowledgeable about Amati's product?" From my reading of the information provided in today's posts (see below), Nortel holds one patent on technology developed between 1992 and May of 1994. This product, Prelude, "demonstrated the capabilities of DMT and was awarded the standard."

In the 2 1/2 years since then DMT technology has changed considerably and Nortel clearly doesn't have a product that can compete with Amati's. If they did, they wouldn't be settling for the second-rate CAP and third-rate QAM solutions. I don't mean to be derogatory, I'm just restating what's been said by everyone in the industry who's tested ADSL products.

I agree time to market is still a concern. I'm hoping MOT and TI come through and blow that one out of the water, too. I can dream, can't I? :)

Regards,

Pat

<<<From 1992 through May 1994, Northern Telecom supported Amati through two research and development agreements. The total funding was in excess of $5 million and directed toward developing and manufacturing a product with which to attain the ANSI standard for ADSL. The resulting product, Prelude, demonstrated the capabilities of DMT and was awarded the standard. During this time, Northern Telecom controlled sales and marketing, and Amati sold over $3 million of Preludes to Northern Telecom for resale to telephone companies in 15 countries worldwide. In 1995, as part of a settlement, Northern Telecom was issued 75,000 shares of Amati's Series A Preferred Stock and Amati received control of all intellectual property generated during the project, subject to a non-exclusive, royalty free license to Northern Telecom. Four patent applications co-owned by Northern Telecom and Amati have been filed as a result of the project.>>>
