MIAMI (AP) -- Tropical Storm Mitch strengthened as it spun across the Caribbean early
today, with forecasters predicting the slow-moving storm would soon become a hurricane.

After remaining stationary most of Thursday, Mitch began heading north and was expected to
get stronger, said Lixion Avila, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center in
Miami.

At 5 a.m. EDT, the storm was about 345 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica, and moving north
at 7 mph. Mitch had top sustained winds of about 60 mph. To be considered a hurricane,
winds must reach at least 74 mph.

The system was expected to eventually turn to the northwest, but it was unclear whether it
would hit the United States.

No tropical storm warnings or watches have been issued.

Regards,

Mitch
