BusinessWeek ranks the world's high-tech companies

NEW YORK, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq:DELL - news), Britain's Vodafone Group Plc. (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: VOD.L), and Germany's SAP AG (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: SAPG.F) were picked as the first, second, and third best high-tech companies financially by a new BusinessWeek analysis, the November 2 edition of the magazine said.

''BusinesWeek has taken a careful statistical look at the performance in the high-tech industry and unearthed a batch of surprises,'' the magazine said.

Companies were divided into eight categories, including: software, networking, and the Internet, the magazine said.

Then they were judged on four criteria: revenue growth, total revenues, shareholder return, and return on equity, a statement added. Companies that did not grow as fast as their industry were thrown out right from the start, the magazine noted.
