Consolidation in the PC Industry has been a long-forcast evolution. People have always assumed that the top 4 or 5 companies would take over the lion's share of the market. Witness the dismal attempts by Toshiba/Sony to enter the PC (non notebook) market. Also witness the decimation of market share for Acer, packard-bell/NEC etc. Large corporations need viable companies to buy and service their servers, PC's etc.

It would be truly remarkable if IBM exits the box-making industry. It, of course, would aid DELL immensely and underscores how efficient and successful DELL's approach has been. It also makes one wonder, however, if the long-term approach for DELL would also be to enter the service industry in a big way. Perhaps it would be a useful area for DELL to grow into when the PC market growth is no longer at 15-17% per year.
