I would toss in CFMT as a player in the segment that has not fared as well and is clearly more vulnerable.

As an aside, my in situ question was directed more at understanding if there is any strategic value in the "KLAC-moving-into-the-front-end" rumors that have been circulating of late (aside from the obvious synergies in R&D, Field Service and Support, Purchasing Economies, etc.) ...

Random (and probably useless) datapoints:

-- KLAC cancels a series of investor meetings in Boston this week.

-- LRCX cancels similar meetings in Denver.

-- KLAC rambled on their last conference call about the success of the Tencor acquisition and integration -- a change from previous calls.

-- Obviously Bagley is quite familiar with KLAC ... cross-pollenation of the boards of both companies.

AMAT moves with Opal and Orbot ...

KLAC moves with [some front-end company or companies] ...

I believe it is merely useless speculation.
