As for some Israeli quid pro quo. With respect, who are you kidding???

The middle east peace pressure of the United States is a gift we are bestowing on both parties. Our primary problem in the Middle East is our continued close support and identification with Israel despite the fact that the current government, has, until this agreement, shown very little interest in moving forward. Our problems with the Arabs could also be resolved by distancing ourself from Israel.

The notion that Israel's releasing a number of Palestinian prisoners is in the vital interest of the US is a perversion of the whole process. We have pushed it on Israel as a necessary element for the Palestinians to believe they have gotten enough to go forward, despite their deeply inferior position. For the United States to be asked to "pay" for this Israeli move (despite our decades of $3 billion per year military and other aid to a very small country) is beyond outrageous. They owe us. Huge time. We hardly owe them.
