RESEARCH ALERT- Roberston Stephens ups chip equips NEW YORK, Oct 23 (Reuters) - BancAmerica Robertson Stephens on Friday said analyst Sue Billat raised her view on the semiconductor equipment sector. Billat upgraded industry leaders Applied Materials Inc. (Nasdaq:AMAT - news), ASM Lithography Holdings NV (Nasdaq:ASMLF - news), Etec Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:ETEC - news), and KLA-Tencor Corp. (Nasdaq:KLAC - news) to ratings of buy from long-term attractive. Billat also reiterated her upgrades of Teradyne (NYSE:TER - news) and Novellus Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:NVLS - news). ''We believe the semiconductor capital equipment sector has hit bottom and will increasingly see technology buys from leading chipmakers,'' said Billat in a research note. ''We believe the combination of DRAM stabilization and strong results by microprocessor makers is leading chipmakers to spend their capital budgets, albeit selectively and still at historically low levels.'' Billat believes equipment suppliers offering 0.18 micron and below capability will be the beneficiaries in 1999. Intel recently sought ensured high-speed memory capacity by making a $500 million investment in Micron, which Billat believes has been earmarked for 0.18 micron capacity, the note said. Shares of Applied Materials Inc. rose 9/16 to 33-7/16 on Thursday. Shares of ASM Lithography Holdings NV rose 1-6/16 to 23-13/16. Shares of Etec Systems rose 3 to 34-1/2. Shares of KLA-Tencor rose 1-5/16 to 33-7/8. Shares of Teradyne rose 11/16 to 30-15/16. Shares of Novellus Systems Inc. rose to 38-5/8, down 3/8.
