PITTSBURGH, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:
FORE - news), a leading global supplier of multiservice networking solutions,
today announced it has won the InternetWeek Best of Breed Award, the top
prize in the publication's prestigious annual ATM (asynchronous transfer mode)
lab test. FORE's ATM solutions, based on the resilient Intelligent
Infrastructure(TM), far surpassed competitors' products in supporting
application -- level traffic, performance, ease of setup and quality of service
(QoS).

The competition took place at the Advanced Network Computing Laboratory
in Honolulu, HI, and was held in conjunction with the University of Hawaii. The
event challenged participants to create a simulated metropolitan area network
between the islands of Oahu and Maui that could handle network traffic
modeled on actual application-level traffic on the University's existing backbone
network. Overall performance of the FORE Systems products exceeded those
of competing products from 3Com, Bay Networks, Hitachi, Cabletron and
Olicom.

''FORE's industry-leading solutions continue to be recognized worldwide, not
only by our customers but also with these prestigious industry awards,'' said
Ron McKenzie, vice president of strategic marketing at FORE Systems. ''This
recognition confirms that FORE's product line provides unparalleled reliability,
scalability and flexibility.''

The test methodology involved building an ATM network consisting of ATM
switches, Ethernet switches, routers and ATM and Ethernet-attached
workstations. In the evaluation, FORE utilized its entire product portfolio,
including the ForeRunner(R) ASX(TM)-1000 ATM Backbone Switch, the
ForeRunnerLE(TM) 155 ATM Workgroup Switch, the ES-3810 Ethernet
Workgroup Switch and the ForeRunner ASN(TM)-9000 MPOA Route
Server.

''FORE's ATM-solution out-performed the competitor products in almost
every category,'' added McKenzie. ''Not only did we demonstrate exceptional
network performance all around, but we also excelled in our support for ATM
applications such as video and computer telephony. Most gratifying about this
award is that it acknowledges the overall strength of our entire product line and
demonstrates that FORE's solutions outpace the competition's in every
important aspect.''

In announcing FORE's top honors, InternetWeek's Wayne Rash wrote:
''There's no question that ATM's 500-pound gorilla is FORE Systems, Inc.

Looks like in ATM, we know who the gorilla is.
