Hmm, sounded like you were in full-screen mode. You do still have a cursor and can type, correct? If you move your mouse to the top of the screen do you get a taskbar? And hitting Alt-C does nothing?

Was this working fine before? What have you done since it didn't work, have you played with registry at all?

Push comes to shove, try reinstalling Word.
