Hi Wily

Silicon Germanium

A previous company I worked for was well advanced in germanium technology, but they got out of it for a variety of reasons.
It does not adapt to large wafer sizes.
It is extremely brittle
It is suitable for small structures
It has extraordinary high speed, it will at speeds towards 50Ghz
To process it presents enormous environmental problems and costs
It is very expensive.

I am aware of the new silicon/germanium technology, but I do not much
about it in detail. Maybe the combination with silicon solves some of the problems, I will endeavor to find out. I am guessing that it is consists of a high speed germanium island on a (slow) data crunching piece of silicon. Its application in telecom indicates that it is a small v.high speed RF chip

Regards
Alan
