India: What Recession??

Ratan:

Every time I call my younger brother in Gujrat the conversation always ends in a discussion of the Indian Economy and things of that nature. My bro having couple of degrees in economics keeps telling me:

'oh yeah, I think we are going through a recession',

I would say something like: 'What recession? As far as I know the classical definition of a recession is when a country's GDP contracts in two consecutive quarters and all the data I see tells the Indian economy is growing at 5-6% annually of late,so what are you talking about?'

Then he would go on telling me Gujrat being and industrial state and all he could see the signs of weakness in the economy such as lay-offs,closed shops etc etc, quite unlike Kerala where is hardly any industry. Well obviously there is some shift in economic activity taking place in India either due to the current economic turmoil in S.E.Asia and around the world or I don't know what, but anyway here is an interesting article that deals with this subject.

BTW how are we doing in the investment front lately? Are you in or out?
