Bruce--

Let's remember that Sal is 19 years old, and so his perspective on even fairly recent history can be called theoretical.

I am also a bit puzzled by his uncritical enthusiasm for Microsoft and the way it's run. Most agree that their products are not as good as they might be--does Sal actually LIKE Win 95?; does anyone? And let's remember that they're under investigation for hiring too many contract workers (to whom they naturally don't offer benefits). Last year I did a contract job for a Microsoft subsidiary, and can only say that 1) they're as stingy as they're rumored to be; 2) marketing is more important than product quality; and 3) I've never been involved in a project as badly-organized as this one was. In the end, the Product was (I gather) satisfactory, even good, but it could have been better, and along the way we all wasted a great deal of time and money unnecessarily.

MSFT isn't the eighth wonder of the world; it's the 600-pound gorilla. Come to think of it, maybe Sal's analogy isn't so far off the mark...
