create boot disks

Someone on one of the usenet threads indicated the HP rescue software option was initiated with a boot from a floppy. They also indicated it would span disks.

The IDE option looks good to me considering the SCSI error I can not seem to get rid of. I tried a few more things and am still making coasters with the same error message (the test CD before burning works! but the final burn does not). Some of my original problems on the AHA 2940U2W controller were related to termination. The drive was terminated and I thought it was not. Ricoh documentation is poor IMO. I finally removed what appears to be circuitry from the back of the drive to disable the termination. The Adaptec software now loads in Win95 without a problem (I also loaded new drivers for the AHA 2940U2W). The burn process/error remains the same however. Some of my tests were on the AHA2920 controller with the Ricoh MP6201s drive properly terminated and the only device on the chain..same SCSI error message. I guess I will have to try the drive on another machine to see if it is a mobo bios conflict.

The local stores are stocked with the HP 8110i @$399. The only difference I can see is the software package. HP indicates the 8100i is designed for business and the 8110i for home use www2.hp.com

The drive has some potential for an all in one solution as Clarence was discussing in a previous post. One issue would be the ability to implement an automated selective directory backup either with HP software or Seagate or other. I would also like to create a customized boot CD with an OS and appropriate Power Quest programs. One can envision using the CD as the KOT device and restoring Drive Image files from where ever they may reside. I would assume at least one image would have to reside on a harddrive as the CD drive would be in use...if it were the only external media source. One could also opt for a floppy boot (NOT my favorite option) and restore from CD...HP style.

I think the read/write speeds are important. I spend a lot of idle hours watching CD burns. The HP drive speeds are impressive for a CD burner..specifically 24X in standard operating mode.

Plextor has two new drives slated for the near future. I believe the November drive is an 8X burn rated CDR (need to verify). Early 1999 I believe they will be introducing a RW drive (also need verification). I want to find out more about the Plextor software options..it may be one of their advantages....particularly with more than one Plextor drive.
