Michael - From your article - DoCoMo is not opposed to merged standards:

"Europe, in fact, had originally set a goal for starting up IMT-2000-based services one year later than our goal," said Nagata. But DoCoMo pushed for its timetable because it "couldn't afford to spend that extra year just sitting around and waiting for a standard."

The only thing that might sway DoCoMo from the W-CDMA course it has set is the potential for a unified global standard. "If [the ITU] reaches an agreement on a single global standard, we will modify our proposal to the newly adopted standard," Nagata said. "But if there is not a single standard — [if] multiple standards are allowed — we would not add any modifications to what we've already been doing here."
