The International Simulcast Conference in Toronto was held a week ago. One of the big topics was Frame Relay which gives racetracks access to computer networks....i.e. the North American Simulcast Racing Information Network (NASRIN). The real power of frame relay is unification of the industry on the same network. Currently 39 tracks and related wagering sites are participating in NASRIN, and as many as 74 are expected to be signed up by year's end. That number is expected to grow to 165 by July 1999. In case you forgot, NASRIN is a joint venture of AUTOTOTE and AT&T. Participating tracks realize immediate savings on simulcast related costs with a network since they only need one communication line for betting data, which is sent via the network, rather than using multiple telephone lines and other equipment. Savings for the industry will exceed $11 million data transmission costs alone. The potential uses for the networks go way beyond sending tote data. NASRIN can eventually be used for all kinds of racing information to Equibase, etc. as well as for video conferencing, customer billing, home wagering, race replay kiosks, and providing Internet access to patrons in their betting carrels. This could be the BIG FUTURE as the industry works together....GO TTE GO!
