I understand what you are saying. I do not feel like speculating about the notion of innocence in fairy tales, like the Adam and Eve story.

In reality, most cultures make a big issue out of the passage from childhood into adulthood or from the inability to procreate to the ability to do so.

From what little I remember about the Bible, the notion of fertility, (another name for sex?) was a big issue. Was there not a lot of text devoted to the son of so-and-so who was the brother of so-and-so?

The interpretation of the character of Mephisto depends upon which author uses it and how it is/was used. One author may be more sympathetic to Mephisto than another, just as one person might sympathize with Bill Clinton's personal problems while another person is unable to do so.
