Q3,

The reason that I deal in IBM/MVS is that those 13,000 to 15,000 global sites are plenty big enough for my limited bandwidth to chase.

Remember that IBM is something like revenus of US$75B with MSFT at US$9B.

I've not heard a peep from DEC, Tandem, Data General regarding the Y2K exposure amongst their customer base. IBM made a large formal statement in November 1995 regarding their plans. I believe the catalog of their products (which specific releases you need, etc.) is now in its fourth edition & lists close to 10,000 products.

I am not aware of anyother major vendors having gone to this length. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Regading Gartner Group's numbers... I think they've been pretty realistic (negative?) on the costs of client/server/desktop computing for several years now. When you add up all the costs, desktop MIPS are something like 4 or 5 times more expensive than mainframe MIPS. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to recornize that the hardware & software costs (easily identifiable) are at most only 25% of the full costs. Administration/support costs eat the desktop alive when compared to "dumb" terminals.

Back to you. <g>

David
