I haven't seen any online links yet, but this morning's SF Chronicle had an interesting story about the case.

Under Tennessee law, although Looper is in the slammer, his name can (and apparently will) stay on the ballot. Both parties (Reps and Dems) are encouraging a write-in, Burk's wife.

Byron Looper had his name changed to Byron (Low Tax) Looper—parentheses included. Catchy, eh? He's also under investigation in a political scandal local to the area.

He must have figured his chances were slim, and killing the incumbent was last-ditch effort to win? Beats all those awful mudslinging commercials we get in our Bay Area corner of the world.
