The same thing has happened to me in the past
but for some reason it doesnt now.
If you hit Clr+alt+del you can stop the program
that is running.
You may want to check your scanner drivers I know
that this was a problem for me so I deleted my scanner
software and reinstalled it.
I don't know if this was the problem or not but it
doesn't do it anymore.
