VIENNA, Austria (Reuters) - Palestinian President Yasser Arafat asked the European Union Saturday to help safeguard the
implementation of an interim peace accord with Israel signed Friday in Washington.

Austrian Foreign Minister Wolfgang Schuessel, whose country holds the EU presidency, told Arafat that the 15-nation bloc would
help protect the peace process and said that an EU donors' conference would be summoned soon as part of the follow-up
measures.

Arafat flew straight to Austria to brief EU leaders on the peace process after signing the security-for-land deal with Israeli Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House after a marathon summit with President Clinton.

''We have to stress here now the European role,'' Arafat told a news conference after talks with Schuessel.

''We are sure that this initiative will be implemented. But we are in need of European help to push forward the peace process and to
protect the peace process, because we have to say that there are enemies on both sides against the peace process,'' he said,
speaking in English.

The Palestinian president said the interim accord held out hope for the entire Middle East region.

''This will give the opportunity not only to the Palestinians but hope it will also open the doors for the Lebanese and for the Syrians
also to achieve real progress, real advance with the Israelis,'' he said.

Schuessel said the EU strongly supported the interim agreement, which ended a 19-month stalemate and renewed hopes for a final
Middle East peace settlement.

The accord envisages a phased Israeli withdrawal from 13 percent of the West Bank in exchange for Palestinian security measures
against violent militants.

''It is obvious new momentum is now possible,'' Schuessel said. ''You can be sure that the European Union will stand by and assist
with all our efforts in the political process and in the economic process to help the Palestinian people and to guarantee peace and
stability in the region.

He said he agreed with Arafat that the most important task now was to summon a ministerial-level donors' meeting as soon as
possible.

''We will get in touch with our partners to get agreement on such an important conference. We hope Vienna could be a location for
it...but what is vital is that this conference takes place....soon. We're talking end of November or the beginning of December,''
Schuessel said.

Arafat was due to travel to the southern Austrian lakeside resort of Poertschach later Saturday to address EU leaders gathered
there for an informal two-day summit.

In addition to peace in the Middle East, the EU leaders were expected to discuss the bloc's future political role, its foreign and
security policy, the world economic crisis and ways to bring decision-making closer to its citizens.
